This article is meant to explain the relationship of base currency and points in the platform.
The base currency is the currency in which you are invoiced and in which your points are valued (1 point = 1 base currency unit). This currency is established when your account is created and cannot be changed afterward. Regardless of the recipient's location, awards are always issued in points based on the platform's base currency. For example, on a USD-based platform, awarding 100 points to individuals in different countries will result in each recipient receiving 100 points, representing $100 USD. (Note: We use a real time conversion via a direct API from currencylayer.com to get the exact conversion.)
To provide a seamless user experience, redemption option costs are also converted into points. The cost of an item is converted to the base currency and then rounded to the nearest whole point value. For instance, a user in Japan on a USD-based platform will see a ¥5500 Amazon item displayed as 51 points. The user does not see the intermediate conversion of ¥5500 to $50.88 USD. Please note that due to fluctuating exchange rates, these figures are approximate.
NOTE: purchasing power of parity (PPP) impacts the point cost of items as prices are adjusted to account for local purchasing power. If your organization utilizes this feature, the above calculation for the point cost of items differs slightly.
